The statistics regarding homelessness in the United States are devastating. It’s estimated at over half a million. When you narrow that down to cover women who are pregnant and homeless, the ratio is one in five, which is twice the rate of the general population. Women aged 16 to 19 are most commonly seen in this bracket. Being a homeless woman alone is stressful enough. Include an unplanned pregnancy into the mix, and circumstances become nothing short of overwhelming.

If you are a pregnant and homeless woman, you are not alone. There are options available to help provide care and safety for you and your baby. Particularly if you are considering adoption as a possible future. Adoption Choices of New York is a nonprofit, full-service adoption agency that can provide temporary housing, adoption services and financial assistance.

Unplanned Pregnancy Options

The first thing you will want to determine is how you want to approach your unplanned pregnancy. There are three options available. You can either decide to become a parent, terminate your pregnancy or choose to place your baby for adoption. Whichever path you decide to take is completely up to you.

If you are curious about adoption, our adoption professionals are happy to answer any questions you have and address any concerns; yet, we cannot persuade you one way or the other. Only you can make the final call on what’s best for you and your baby.

Available Pregnancy Programs

As a pregnant and homeless woman in New York, you can find programs dedicated to helping you through the NYC Department of Homeless Services (DHS) and the NYC Social Services Organizations. Each resource has its own set of requirements, so make sure that you research your options to know what you are eligible for.

When you consider adoption with Adoption Choices of New York, we can offer you a list of government resources that can provide you with food, insurance and financial assistance. These can help you get your basic needs met, and can include medical coverage for prenatal care, doctor’s appointments and your hospital plan for birth and delivery.  If applying for this type of assistance is overwhelming to you, we can help you with the applications and provide rides to and from the places you need to go to complete these applications.

Temporary Housing & Shelter

Having shelter while you are pregnant and homeless is extremely important. Not only does it keep you out of the elements and reduce your risk of sickness and infection, but it also provides warmth and safety for your baby as well. The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) can be a great resource if you are seeking housing assistance or information about nearby shelters. However, these may or may not guarantee stable or long-term environments for you to stay in.

For the duration of your pregnancy, Adoption Choices of New York can work to provide temporary housing and financial assistance when it comes to qualifying expenses. When you consider adoption for you and your baby, we promise to do everything we can to make sure that you both stay safe and healthy. You will be assigned an adoption professional who can help you out with your pregnancy plans and provide the encouragement and support you need.

Homeless and Pregnant

Being pregnant and homeless is no small feat. It doesn’t matter what age you are or what state you live in. Pregnancy can be a stressful journey for any woman. Not having access to safety, basic needs, necessary health benefits or medical care can compound that stress. So, it’s natural to feel overwhelmed and at a loss as to what to do. You are not the first woman to experience homelessness during pregnancy, and you won’t be the last. Just know that you have options.

Every woman will face an unplanned pregnancy differently, and that’s completely within your right to do so. What is right and realistic for one pregnant woman may not be best for another. That’s why it’s essential to research and consider all of your pregnancy options thoroughly, and to ask as many questions as you need to. Adoption Choices of New York is there for you to help in any way we can.

Support Adoption Choices

CrowdriseAdoption Choices, Inc. is partnering with Crowdrise, a fundraising website for nonprofits, to help our adoptive parents and birth parents with much needed financial assistance. We understand that expenses keep clients from fulfilling their dreams. Both with birth parents making a plan for adoption, and with adoptive parents growing their family. It is our mission to provide financial assistance through grants and scholarships, awarded annually in November, in honor of National Adoption Month. Funds assist adoptive parents with matching and placements, adoption finalization and helping birth mothers improve their lives through higher education — and much more.

However, we can’t do it alone. Please read up on our programs and donate money where you are able. Your donation will make a huge impact.
