Pregnancy and Unemployment Due to COVID-19

Nobody could’ve predicted the unprecedented times we are living in today. Unless you are clairvoyant, you’re living through something you could not have imagined a year ago. Much of the country is unemployed, having previously worked in jobs that could not operate at the same capacity during the pandemic.

If you find yourself pregnant and unemployed during this time and want to place your baby for adoption, you may feel a bit overwhelmed by your circumstances. You may wonder how you can pay for doctor visits, maternity clothing and the birth of your child. However, there is no need to worry. Your adoption plan during unemployment does not need to look so different from “normal” times. Remember, Adoption Choices of New York  is here for you; we will support your adoption plan and we have many solutions for you if you are pregnant and unemployed due to COVID-19.

Financial Support for Your Adoption Plan during the COVID-19 Pandemic

One thing you should know is that it costs nothing to place your baby for adoption. Nor do you receive money for your baby. However, you may be able to receive financial assistance for the costs of living, including, but not limited to:

  • Transportation to and from doctor’s appointments
  • Medical expenses
  • Rent
  • Utilities
  • Maternity clothes
  • Groceries

This financial assistance may come from the adoptive family and our agency. Pregnancy can be stressful enough, especially during a pandemic. As a birth mother looking to place your child for adoption, you are already making an incredibly selfless choice, which can be emotionally draining. You should not have to bear financial burdens on top of everything else. The goal is to relieve any financial burden possible from the birth mother. Adoption Choices of New York  will work with the adoptive family to do so. We want you to have a happy and healthy pregnancy.

How much financial help can I get?

The exact financial assistance you will receive may vary based on a variety of circumstances. Your precise needs are a big factor. Knowing that you are pregnant and unemployed due to COVID-19, you may have a family member who has already stepped up to support you. However, if you were to lose the support of that family member, for example, you may receive additional financial support. As your living expenses change, the amount of support given to you by Adoption Choices of New York and the adoptive family will rise to meet those changes. The amount the adoptive family is able to provide may also affect the support you receive, but Adoption Choices will work with the adoptive family to meet your needs.

A court will often need to approve your financial support as reasonable. “Reasonable,” in this case, usually means no luxury items — only those needed for your and baby’s health and wellbeing can be approved. This may vary based on local laws, but, ultimately, our agency and the adoptive family will provide what is necessary.
