Common Questions About Adoption

Why choose adoption?
The choice of adoption can be a positive option to an unplanned pregnancy. It is important to learn all you can about how an adoption works and what decisions you can and will need to make during the process. Your adoption process can be tailored to your needs.
Who will help me to understand my decision to place my child for adoption?
The decision to choose adoption is not an easy one. We will provide ongoing counseling to explain the process, legal ramifications and meet your emotional needs. This supportive counseling will begin when you first reach out to us and continue for several weeks after placement of your child. If additional support is needed, referrals are available.
Can I choose the adoptive family for my child?
Yes, you have the option of approving the parents who will be adopting your baby. Each family makes a picture profile, which is a mini-scrap book that tells you about their lives. You will also have the option of meeting a family before making a final decision.
How do I know the adoptive family will provide a safe environment in which to raise my child?
Singles and couples seeking to adopt are carefully screened. There are a series of interviews, child abuse and criminal clearances, health checks and financial reviews. Their home and neighborhood are also evaluated.
Can the agency help me with living expenses if I am unable to work?
You may be eligible for state approved living expenses during your pregnancy and for a brief period after giving birth.
Will I be able to meet the adoptive family in person?
You will have the choice to talk to and meet the prospective adoptive parent(s). Together you will decide how much or how little contact you want, and whether you want them to accompany you to doctor’s visits or be with you in the delivery room.
Will I be able to receive help with transportation if I need it?
Transportation to medical appointments is available.
How do I pay for the medical costs incurred by the pregnancy?
Adoption Choices will help you find assistance in paying the medical bills. Any expenses not covered by private insurance or state funds will be covered by the adoptive family.
Can I have contact with my baby while I am in the hospital?
Prior to the delivery, you will make a plan for your time in the hospital. This will include your seeing and spending time with the baby, as well as the adoptive parent(s) time with the baby, if this is what you choose.
When will the adoptive family take the baby home?
Most often, the baby is discharged from the hospital directly to the adoptive family, the same day you are discharged.
Do I have to go in front of a Judge to give my consent?
Each state has its own rules and regulations regarding adoption. Adoption Choices or your attorney will explain the process to you and whether you would need to appear in a court room. If you need to appear in front of a judge, an attorney will be present with you. If you do not want to appear in court, Adoption Choices can help you select a family in a state where that is not required (ex.: New York).
Will I have to find my own attorney for the adoption?
You are entitled to independent legal counsel at no cost to you, if you wish. The agency will assist you to locating an attorney who is familiar with adoption law.
Can I do an adoption without the expectant or birth father?
It is always best if the expectant or birth father supports you in the plan for your child. However, it is not always necessary that he participate in the adoption. Whether he is entitled to notice of the adoption or whether his consent to the adoption is required are important issues that depend on your particular situation.  An agency representative or your attorney will discuss this with you.
Will I be able to know about my child's health and well-being after his or her birth?
This is something you will talk about with your attorney, agency representative and the adopting family. Each relationship is unique, will be agreed to by you and the adopting family and may include sharing of photos and letters, phone calls or meetings.
