Counseling and Emotional Support for Birth Mothers in New York
Transitions are never easy. When you’re going through your adoption journey, you might feel like you’re alone. You may be the only person in your circle who’s gone through adoption — even the only person who’s been pregnant! It’s easy to feel like no one can understand your choice or your emotions. Huge life changes and decisions need not be traveled alone. There’s always someone out there who has been through or is currently what you’re experiencing. We always recommend counseling and emotional support for birth mothers in New York.
In a group, you can help each other out, hear from different perspectives, and feel like you are part of a community of people who understand you. One-on-one, you can express your thoughts and feelings with a counselor who can help you manage in healthy ways. At Adoption Choices of New York, we can connect you with support groups or counseling to help you feel good emotionally during your adoption journey. The most important thing to remember is that you’re never alone.
What types of resources are available to me during adoption process?
- Adoption Choices Will Point You In the Right Direction
We can connect you directly with counseling and emotional support groups for birth mothers. An unplanned pregnancy can feel like an uprooting event, but we find that support groups can keep you grounded. We can connect you directly with a counseling professional or a support group of other birth mothers who have chosen or are considering adoption through our agency. Be sure to check out our resources page for more information and connections that can help you.
- National Organizations
We understand that Adoption Choices of New York’s groups may not be convenient for you, and you may want something more local. Through the American Adoption Congress, you can search for birth mother support groups in your area. You’ll see different sections for each state that will filter down into different towns.
You can also find help on a larger scale. Having a supportive community is such a wonderful thing. There are organizations such as BirthMom Buds and the On Your Feet Foundation. These organizations work to open new doors to you as well as connect you with other birth mothers just like you.
For example, BirthMom Buds offers a “buddy system,” online forums, a newsletter, and an annual retreat. The On Your Feet Foundation offers educational grants, financial support, coaching, a community, therapist referrals, and retreats. This kind of support can create defining moments for you during your adoption journey.
- The Internet
When in search of a community, the Internet is always a quick way to find people like you. Go on Facebook and search any of your interests and I promise, there’s a group for that. This includes adoption! If you search “birth mothers,” “birth mom,” or anything in that realm, you’ll find tons of groups of varying sizes. You’ll likely click join, answer a few short questions, and soon after be accepted into a group!
It’s important to distinguish that this is not professional counseling or support, but an internet group can still provide a supportive, beneficial community. Facebook groups are great for connecting with others, asking questions, and sharing experiences. It’s a great way to feel less alone in the world, to know that there are people across the world choosing adoption just like you.
How will I afford counseling and emotional support through adoption?
During your pregnancy, the adoptive family pays a fee that will cover any counseling and support that you need. You are giving the gift of adoption to the adoptive family, so you deserve to have the things that will help you out.
After the adoption, it is not guaranteed that counseling and emotional support as a birth mother will be covered financially, but we will still connect you with valuable resources.
You Are Not Alone
When facing anything new in your life, it’s understandable to feel alone, to feel like you have to suffer in silence. But there are always people like you and people willing to help you. Through counseling and emotional support, you can find a community of birth mothers. You can hear all different perspectives on being a birth mother, share your feelings, and find comfort in knowing that you are not alone at all. People relate to you. They understand you, and they want to help.
At Adoption Choices of New York, we will do all we can to make sure you feel supported before, during and after adoption.
