5 Reasons to Recognize National Adoption Month in New York

National Adoption Month is upon us this November, and we think that’s awesome! It’s always a good time to celebrate adoption, and we at Adoption Choices of New York like to use November to put adoption in the spotlight.

Now, why should you celebrate adoption this month? Let’s find out!

1) Make people who have experienced adoption feel seen

By celebrating National Adoption Month, we make all those who have experienced adoption feel seen. Heard. Recognized. This includes adoptees, birth mothers, and adoptive families.

Some birth mothers struggle to explain her decision to choose adoption to everyone. For example, birth mothers aren’t always understood. People might ask, “Why would you give up your child?” If people become more aware of adoption, they would know that the birth mother did not simply “give up” her child. The birth mother made a choice to place her baby for adoption: the best choice for her and her baby, and she may not always get the proper appreciation for her choice!

2) Remind birth mothers that adoption is an option

Many women will face an unexpected pregnancy in their lives and not realize how viable an option adoption is! They may feel shame or anticipate judgment from family members, but what they should know is that adoption is a beautiful, loving thing. It’s a brave choice that your child will come to understand and that the adoptive family will thank you for.

Should you choose adoption, you should know that you are in control of your adoption journey at all times.

3) Reduce stigmas about adoption

Some people still act like adoption is a shameful thing. This comes from every angle: people assume an adoptee feels sad about being adopted, assume the birth mother should feel the same, assume the adoptive family would love a “real” child more. But, the truth is, adoption is no less valid than having a biological child. And the adoptee is a real child. It’s important to make parents aware that adoption is an option for them, too, and they can absolutely have a beautiful connection to their child just as they would a biological child.

By raising awareness of adoption through celebration, potential new parents can see that adoption is an option that can work for them.

4) Recognize the amazing work of adoption professionals

Everyone involved to make adoption possible — from our specialists to our attorneys — do such important work. Without them, the adoption process may not go as smoothly as it does. Especially at our adoption agency. We wouldn’t be able to help birth mothers, adoptees and adoptive parents the way we do without them. Our staff works tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure that your adoption journey unfolds as safely and successfully as possible.

From the moment you begin your adoption journey with us, your adoption casework walks with you every step of the way. An adoption counselor is ready and willing to help you process through your emotions and navigate your true thoughts about the process. In-house legal representation is available, should you need it. Everyone works as a unit to ensure that both you and your baby are well taken care of.

5) Educate people on different kinds of adoption

Some people may think that adoption is one thing, cut and dry. But, in reality, it can come in all different forms. At Adoption Choices of New York, we specialize in domestic infant adoption and newborn adoption. We all welcome and support adoptive families and birth parents from all walks of life — LGBT, transracial, single-parent households.
